Ad Campaign, Rhetorical Appeals, and Propaganda

President: You will write and speak about your company’s credibility. Your main appeal is ethos… You want people and customers to trust you and to feel as though they can relate to your brand. Talk about how you started and how you came up with the idea. (Remember, this is a made up company… so feel free to embellish a bit.) You will reveal your company’s symbol and slogan. (Think Nike check mark and “Just do it!”)
Vice President: You are trying to appeal to customer and client emotions. You want them to get excited or have a vested interest in your product and company. Pathos. You will also introduce your product and discuss what is so special/ unique about it. (remember glittering generalities)
Marketing Director: Your job is to appeal to logos. You are bringing in the logical, factual, statistical side of things. You will talk cost and profit and what really makes your product make sense. What makes it different from other products out there, and why is it worth purchasing?
Advertising Director: Your job is to discuss the type of commercial being shown. What type of propaganda will be used as well as who the target audience is? How are you appealing to your customers? What creative approach are you taking to showcase your product?

***There are two parts to this project. The written and spoken presentation will be an individual grade. The actual commercial and “company” dynamic will be a group grade.***

Antony's Speech

MARK ANTONY'S FUNERAL ORATION
From: Julius Caesar
by William Shakespeare
  Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus
Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answer'd it.
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest--
For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men--
Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
He hath brought many captives home to Rome
Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Lupercal
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

Outline for Caesar Essay

Prompt: Which speech was more effective/ persuasive. Use text evidence and analysis to support your thesis.

Intro: Brief explanation of Julius Caesar and why two men gave speeches at his funeral.
End the first paragraph with your thesis statement: The answer and the why: My example is below. Use your NNE charts to create your own.

Julius Caesar has been known throughout history as one of Rome’s most effective rulers. In Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar was murdered by his “trusted friends” and Senators, as many of them thought they were stopping a “tyrant” from taking over Rome. At his funeral, both Brutus and Antony gave speeches to try to convince the Roman people of their causes. Brutus tried to show the crowd that what he and the Senators did was in their best interests, while Antony refuted that wholeheartedly. Though Brutus gave a convincing speech at Caesar’s funeral, it was Antony who proved to be more persuasive in his cause by appealing to both emotion and logic, a clever use of sarcasm, and by using Brutus’ own words against him.

1st Body Paragraph: Discuss his use of emotion and logic. Use text evidence showing examples of both. Elaborate and explain his message.

2nd Body Paragraph: Discuss his use of sarcasm. Text evidence and explain.

3rd Body paragraph: Talk about what Brutus did well, (use text evidence) then show how Antony did a better job of using Brutus’ words against him. Use text evidence and explain.

Conclusion: Final thoughts and any remaining evidence.
