Around the World in 80 Days FB Assignment
Read Around the World in 80 Days for 30 minutes. Then, finish your character Facebook profiles for Phileas and Jean. Complete their entire profiles and write
3 posts per character. You can work on your own or with a partner. The
posts need to reflect the character’s personality.
Example for Phileas: I lunched with a family
with the surname, Kardashian, today. They conducted themselves with little to
no manners, and I found it necessary to cut our visit short. I have neither the
time nor the patience for crass behavior like that. I very much look forward to
departing for Alaska this evening. Though the airline said the flight was
cancelled, I intend to find an alternative route out of this God-forsaken
place, perhaps there will be room on a shipping container barge.
Example for Jean: The Kardashians were
a terribly undignified group of heathens! I thought at one point Mr. Fogg would stomp his foot in
indignation, but as usual he maintained his composure. The matriarch of the
family, Cris, made a vulgar attempt at flirtation, but Mr. Fogg would have none
of that. I am terribly worried about missing our flight to Alaska, but Fogg
insists it will be no problem. He even mentioned something about a shipping
barge! My nerves are shot!

A few Grammar Tips...
Overuse of apostrophes
Apostrophes indicate
one of two things: Possession or letters missing, as in "Sara's iPad"
and "it's" for "it is" (second "i" missing). They
don't belong on plurals. When you have more than one of something there's no
need to add an apostrophe. Same thing with your last name. If you want to refer
to your family but don't want to list everyone's first name write "The
Johnsons" not "The Johnson's." Years also shouldn't have
apostrophes. For example, "1980s" is correct but "1980's"
is not.
Lay vs. Lie
Generally, if you can replace the word
in question with some variant of "put" or "place," use
"lay." If not, use "lie." So, it should be "I need to
lie down" and "He laid his keys on the table." "Lying down"
gets confusing when you're talking about doing it in the past, however. For
example, it should be "Mark lay on the bed after coming home from work
yesterday."
Affect and effect
Maybe you've never mastered the difference between
"affect" and "effect.” If that's you, it's time to understand
these words now. "Affect" is a verb that means to do something that
causes an "effect," which is noun. Just think of the "a" in
"affect" also is used in "action," which is what verbs do.

Ad Campaign
Product Idea: New
and Innovative. It can be as realistic or imagined as you like.
Market Audience:
Who… don’t be vague… who is your ideal target audience? If you have multiple targets,
how will you create a product and an advertisement that appeals to all of them?
What is the Name of
your company and product? Ex. Nike is the company but the Air Jordan is the
product. How do they tie together?
What is your slogan…
logo? Slogan is “Just do it.” The logo is the check mark/ the Nike symbol.
Once you’ve decided all of these things, hold a focus group panel with your ideas and
that audience. Ask them about it and get their feedback. Make adjustments as
needed. (Typed report will be turned
in.)
-
Who did you interview?
-
What questions did you ask?
-
What feedback did you receive?
-
How will this impact your product or
advertisement?
Professional Sales
Pitch: Written and Spoken
-
Create a PPT. or Prezi that details the
following points
The role of President
will establish your company’s credibility. Make your audience trust you.
The role of Marketing
Director will appeal to the logic of your audience. Cost, benefits, how it
works, etc.
The role of Creative
Director will appeal to the emotion of your audience. What is awesome about
your idea? How will you grab the attention of customers? Get the audience
excited.
As a group: Discuss your branding. What are the two or three things that you will maintain
that will last throughout the years? (Think back to the Mac/ Apple branding)
Creative
presentation: Visual

Friday with the Sub
Students are to define the following vocabulary words and write them in sentences:
Expenditure, Stipulate, Diversion
Your assignment for the day: Due at the end of class…
Read The Masque of the Red Death, by Edgar Allan Poe, found on page 372 in the purple textbook. While reading, you are to annotate at least 10 examples of literary devices and analyze their effect and meaning in an NNE Chart.
Example:
Notice from the Text
|
Name of Literary Device
|
Effect and Analysis
|
“A strong and lofty wall girdled it”
|
metaphor and diction
|
By using the metaphor of “girdle,” Poe is comparing the gates around the castle to a tight garment worn around a woman’s waist. This specific diction allows the reader to envision how secure the Prince thought his palace was and his confidence that the “Red Death” would not make it through.
