Friday with the Sub

Students are to define the following vocabulary words and write them in sentences:
Expenditure, Stipulate, Diversion

Your assignment for the day: Due at the end of class…
Read The Masque of the Red Death, by Edgar Allan Poe, found on page 372 in the purple textbook. While reading, you are to annotate at least 10 examples of literary devices and analyze their effect and meaning in an NNE Chart.

Example:

Notice from the Text
Name of Literary Device
Effect and Analysis
“A strong and lofty wall girdled it”
metaphor and diction
By using the metaphor of “girdle,” Poe is comparing the gates around the castle to a tight garment worn around a woman’s waist. This specific diction allows the reader to envision how secure the Prince thought his palace was and his confidence that the “Red Death” would not make it through.
